The various types of asphalt shingles all have similar compositions, but are differentiated by the materials used within those compositions. In the case of organic mat-based shingles, they include a base layer of cellulose made up of wood chips, and recycled cardboard, rags and paper. This cellulose met, or felt, is thicker than fiberglass, making it more durable.

Types of Organic Mat-Based Shingle Roofs

Any type of asphalt shingle variety commonly comes in two types, which differ greatly in cost, durability and the overall finish.

Three-Tab Organic Mat-Based Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the more affordable option, though it does not offer much variety in terms of its look. They only come in one size and shape, which delivers a generally flat-looking roof surface. One of the big advantages of three-tab shingles is its light weight, which is sometimes an important consideration given what the home’s structure can bear.

Architectural Organic Mat-Based Shingles

These are also known as 3D or laminate shingles. One of the major draw cards of architectural shingles is its variety of shapes and sizes, as opposed to the uniform look of three-tab shingles. It is such that homeowners will be able to mimic the look of more premium roofing alternatives, like slate and cedar. Individual architectural shingles are also thicker, making them more durable and longer-lasting.

Advantages of Organic Mat-Based Shingles

Durability

Organic mat-based shingles’ base layer of cellulose together with the double layer of asphalt means it offers superior strength and durability.

Versatility

Though only offered by architectural organic shingles, homeowners love the fact that they can determine exactly what their organic shingle roof can look like. There are no restrictions of uniformity, enabling every homeowner to achieve a unique look.

Easy installation

Installing organic shingles is a simple process that could even be DIY’d by homeowners that are adventurous enough. This ease of installation also impacts overall costs as labor requirements are less than it would be for a typical residential roofing alternative.

Dustin Richards inspected our roof this past week,I believe on 3/13/25. Three other companies also inspected it during the last3-4 weeks. Dustin was the most professional & he took more pictures than any of the others & explained in greater detailthe condition of my 25 year old TileLife cement tile roof.I will continue to use his services in the future because I am convinced he is honest & has great integrity.

I wanted to thank Elo Roofing for the outstanding job on my roof after storm damage. Chris Clarkson did a great job explaining to me the process and giving me very accurate information to start roofing repairs. Nicole was an excellent liason at their office handling correspondance and business. Tim Taylor handled the project completion. Once again, very professional, accurate, and on time and on schedule. Everyone I delt with at Elo Roofing helped to make a difficult process smooth. The new roof looks great. Elo's crew did a great job, and left the worksite clean and in good order. Would absolutely recommend and work with again in future. Hope this helps. 😃👍

They were supposed to do a repair on our roof due to leakage, after they looked at it. They never scheduled. After calling them several times with no response, and waiting on them, we finally found a great company that got the job done.
