Types of Asphalt Shingle Roofs

With the variety of options that asphalt shingle roofing provides, homeowners are able to achieve a unique look on the home without breaking the bank. These are the asphalt shingle types that roofing professionals like Elo Roofing can install in Palm Coast homes:

Three-tab Asphalt Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the most common type of asphalt shingle roofing, classified by their cutouts which make them look like three separate pieces. They’re affordable, lightweight, easy to maintain, energy efficient, and can last up to 20 years.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

Laminated with an additional asphalt layer and bonded with asphalt sealant, architectural shingles have a more defined, structural look and are more durable and waterproof than three-tab asphalt shingles. They come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes and can easily mimic the look of more premium roofing alternatives like cedar and slate.

In addition to these types, there are also different materials that your shingles could be made of:

Fiberglass Shingles

Made with a combination of woven fiberglass as the base, asphalt coating, and ceramic granules on top, these materials create a waterproof and UV-protectant shingle while also being extremely lightweight and thin due to its lower amounts of asphalt.

Organic Mat-based Shingles

Organic mat-based asphalt shingle roofing has a recycled felt paper layer for its base. They’ll be heavier, thicker, and slightly more expensive than fiberglass shingles but they’re also more rugged and flexible.

Common Causes of Roof Leaks

While roof leaks in the home make themselves very apparent to everyone under the roof, what’s less apparent is their exact cause. It could be any number of things causing water to enter the home, that’s why it’s best to get professional roofing contractors in to assess the situation.

These are some of the potential causes of roof leaks:

Broken or missing shingles

Broken or missing shingles can be the result of storm damage or simply a consequence of an aging roof. It can cause exposure, making it easy for water to enter the roof. This is something that can be avoided with regular maintenance checks and repairs. We also do 24/7 emergency roof repair service in case your roof was damaged by a storm.

Compromised roof vents

In order for roof vents to function optimally, they need to be adequately sealed. Over time they can suffer cracks and gaps in the housing or along the pipes, which is bound to cause roof leaks.

Debris build-up

Excess debris on the roof and within gutters can cause easily-avoidable damage to the roof by way of moisture build-up. Regularly clearing the roof of debris will ensure that water runs off smoothly without the chance of accumulating on the roof’s surface and eventually penetrating the home.

Flashing

Flashing plays a vital role in sealing off moisture. They are specifically placed where roof transitions occur, and could otherwise be easy entry points for water. It is common for flashing to move out of place or suffer cracks over time, which can cause major roof leaks within the home.

Water: A Home’s Worst Enemy

No homeowner wants water entering the home, especially via the roof. If water continues to enter your home, it may cause lasting damage that can result in significant expenses.

  • Water causes mold issues and may result in a variety of different harmful growths.
  • Water can warp and rot wood, which may cause significant structural problems that require extensive repair work.
  • Water damage may be destructive to the rest of your home in terms of damage to furniture, appliances and electronics.

Dustin Richards inspected our roof this past week,I believe on 3/13/25. Three other companies also inspected it during the last3-4 weeks. Dustin was the most professional & he took more pictures than any of the others & explained in greater detailthe condition of my 25 year old TileLife cement tile roof.I will continue to use his services in the future because I am convinced he is honest & has great integrity.

I wanted to thank Elo Roofing for the outstanding job on my roof after storm damage. Chris Clarkson did a great job explaining to me the process and giving me very accurate information to start roofing repairs. Nicole was an excellent liason at their office handling correspondance and business. Tim Taylor handled the project completion. Once again, very professional, accurate, and on time and on schedule. Everyone I delt with at Elo Roofing helped to make a difficult process smooth. The new roof looks great. Elo's crew did a great job, and left the worksite clean and in good order. Would absolutely recommend and work with again in future. Hope this helps. 😃👍

They were supposed to do a repair on our roof due to leakage, after they looked at it. They never scheduled. After calling them several times with no response, and waiting on them, we finally found a great company that got the job done.
