While their causes may vary from age to superficial damage, once you’ve identified roof leaks, they should be assessed and repaired as soon as possible to avoid damage to the rest of the home.

Types of Asphalt Shingle Roofs

With the variety of options that asphalt shingle roofing provides, homeowners are able to achieve a unique look on the home without breaking the bank. These are the asphalt shingle types that roofing professionals like Elo Roofing can install in Palm Coast homes:

Three-tab Asphalt Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the most common type of asphalt shingle roofing, classified by their cutouts which make them look like three separate pieces. They’re affordable, lightweight, easy to maintain, energy efficient, and can last up to 20 years.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

Laminated with an additional asphalt layer and bonded with asphalt sealant, architectural shingles have a more defined, structural look and are more durable and waterproof than three-tab asphalt shingles. They come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes and can easily mimic the look of more premium roofing alternatives like cedar and slate.

In addition to these types, there are also different materials that your shingles could be made of:

Fiberglass Shingles

Made with a combination of woven fiberglass as the base, asphalt coating, and ceramic granules on top, these materials create a waterproof and UV-protectant shingle while also being extremely lightweight and thin due to its lower amounts of asphalt.

Organic Mat-based Shingles

Organic mat-based asphalt shingle roofing has a recycled felt paper layer for its base. They’ll be heavier, thicker, and slightly more expensive than fiberglass shingles but they’re also more rugged and flexible.

Common Causes of Roof Leaks

While roof leaks in the home make themselves very apparent to everyone under the roof, what’s less apparent is their exact cause. It could be any number of things causing water to enter the home, that’s why it’s best to get professional roofing contractors in to assess the situation.

These are some of the potential causes of roof leaks:

Broken or missing shingles

Broken or missing shingles can be the result of storm damage or simply a consequence of an aging roof. It can cause exposure, making it easy for water to enter the roof. This is something that can be avoided with regular maintenance checks and repairs. We also do 24/7 emergency roof repair service in case your roof was damaged by a storm.

Compromised roof vents

In order for roof vents to function optimally, they need to be adequately sealed. Over time they can suffer cracks and gaps in the housing or along the pipes, which is bound to cause roof leaks.

Debris build-up

Excess debris on the roof and within gutters can cause easily-avoidable damage to the roof by way of moisture build-up. Regularly clearing the roof of debris will ensure that water runs off smoothly without the chance of accumulating on the roof’s surface and eventually penetrating the home.

Flashing

Flashing plays a vital role in sealing off moisture. They are specifically placed where roof transitions occur, and could otherwise be easy entry points for water. It is common for flashing to move out of place or suffer cracks over time, which can cause major roof leaks within the home.

Water: A Home’s Worst Enemy

No homeowner wants water entering the home, especially via the roof. If water continues to enter your home, it may cause lasting damage that can result in significant expenses.

  • Water causes mold issues and may result in a variety of different harmful growths.
  • Water can warp and rot wood, which may cause significant structural problems that require extensive repair work.
  • Water damage may be destructive to the rest of your home in terms of damage to furniture, appliances and electronics.

I had to take a long time to write this review because I was so disheartened by my experience. It was a frustrating and costly ordeal that fell FAR short of my expectations. I would strongly advise against using Elo Roofing for any roofing needs. My experience with Elo Roofing was deeply disappointing for several reasons. Despite our agreed-upon terms originally, I was shocked to discover an additional $3,000 charge on my bill. We were quoted ~$14,000 (which was fair with the other quotes we got!) but we ended up paying ~$17,000. Unfortunately, the problems didn’t end there.Poor Protection and Cleanliness- The workers failed to cover my pool during installation of the roof, leading to significant debris contamination, along with a brand new pool filter destroyed and not taken responsibility for.- Nails were literally flowing out of my gutters, there were piles of nails underneath them after every rain storm. Rolls of nails were left in our yard.- Almost a year later, we continue to find nails throughout our property. We constantly get flat tires and have to pick up nails off the ground. I'm afraid to walk in my yard with bare feet.Incompetent Workmanship:- The lack of expertise among the workers necessitated a COMPLETE roof redo.- Materials I had already paid for were carelessly discarded.- Our gutters are now crooked and pooling since they did our roof.- Our Lanai has a leakProlonged Construction and Mess:- Despite the small size of our roof, the construction dragged on for four grueling days of misery and our pets being scared because of all the banging on the roof.- Trash was left everywhere during those four days and remained afterward.Unprofessional Behavior:I was truly embarrassed to have these workers in my driveway all week long as a new homeowner and new to my neighborhood. This is not the impression I want to put out. They had the most stereotypical dilapidated van which I typically wouldn’t judge.-They tell you verbal statements that are actually just lies according to the paperwork.- Our salesmen, Sam and CJ, took us out to dinner afterward, but we later realized this was an attempt to placate us after a botched job.- They pestered us to put their sign back up in our yard after we removed it to mow our grass.Save yourself frustration, financial loss, loss of time, and potential hazards by choosing against ELO roofing. And the most important part, your peace of mind.Things to note: Sam and Cj are ridiculously nice to get you to choose them. We had three other quotes on our roof and we decided to go with Elo because we thought they were professional when it was actually quite the opposite. They are very welcoming to young naive new homeowners. They are dangerously nice and use it as a weapon to profit off of you. I wish my review could do more justice to how bad of an experience I had.
