Types of Organic Mat-Based Shingle Roofs

Any type of asphalt shingle variety commonly comes in two types, which differ greatly in cost, durability and the overall finish.

Three-Tab Organic Mat-Based Shingles

Three-tab shingles are the more affordable option, though it does not offer much variety in terms of its look. They only come in one size and shape, which delivers a generally flat-looking roof surface. One of the big advantages of three-tab shingles is its light weight, which is sometimes an important consideration given what the home’s structure can bear.

Architectural Organic Mat-Based Shingles

These are also known as 3D or laminate shingles. One of the major draw cards of architectural shingles is its variety of shapes and sizes, as opposed to the uniform look of three-tab shingles. It is such that homeowners will be able to mimic the look of more premium roofing alternatives, like slate and cedar. Individual architectural shingles are also thicker, making them more durable and longer-lasting.

Advantages of Three-Tab Shingle Roofs

Let’s take a look at the reasons why three-tab shingles are so popular with homeowners in Jacksonville.

Affordable and cost-effective

There is no contest. Three-tab shingles is the most affordable home roofing option. Consider this against the value homeowners get in terms of the look and finish, it would prove to be a good deal by any standard.

Lightweight

Three-tab shingles are well-known for their incredibly light weight. This becomes advantageous in situations where the home’s structure may not be able to bear the weight of heavier materials. The great thing though, is that it’s just light enough to ensure it won’t easily be blown off or compromised during extreme weather conditions.

Easy to Maintain

Given that a three-tab shingle roof is properly installed, it should be relatively easy to maintain. It has an uncomplicated installation process, and when there is a need for roof repairs, these will be quick and simple to do.

Sustainable

When three-tab shingles or the entire roof needs to be replaced, homeowners can do it guilt-free as the material is 100% recyclable. It could either take on another life in the form of paving for example, or go back into the circular economy and may even be repurposed as part of another roofing material.

ELO Roofing services provides excellent roofing that I wasn't aware of given past exprience with roofers. Victoria answered the phone when I called; she was, freindly and proffessional. We set a meeting with the Project Mngr., C.J. H. C.J. was a gentleman and ready to find out what was causing my roof leak; he beagn detailed inspections in the attic and on top of roof. My problem wasn't the nineteen shingles replaced by a roofer. It was the vent tube cover was erroded. ELO Roofing estimate and reair time was fast, professional and efficient. Now I am happy homeowner, again. I am glad that I found ELO Roofing, for any of my furture roofing concerns. It is a company I trust and value that will to do the right thing the first time.

Elo Roofing completed a full roofing job for us. Every detail of the project was handled in an exceptional manner. Robert Osborne was exceptional in discussing the project with us and really took the time to educate us on every aspect of a roofing job. Victoria Rodriguez, the project manager, kept us fully informed before and during the project process. Highly recommend this company Update to initial review…. I need to post the below update, an update to initial 5-star review that was posted a few days after project completion. Please note that this review has absolutely nothing to do with the installation or workmanship. This was great. My issue is with the aggressive sales tactics and after installation responses. Basically I believe that I was conned into getting a replacement roof that was not needed. I have reached out multiple times to the company and the only response that I received was an unpleasant one from the initial salesman. Elo replaced my roof on August 20th 2026. The roofing debacle started in September 2025 to address a leak in my bathroom ceiling. I was told then that my roof was not leaking and that the leak was coming from the venting pipes. We paid $1500 to address the issue. July 2026 the same spot was leaking again. We were then told that our entire roof had over 60% shingle disintegration which could possibly be defective shingles, and that we needed a new roof. I asked why the leak was in the same spot and was told that the leak was coming from the roof. My roof was only 11 years old. I specifically asked if a roof replacement will take care of the leak and was told yes. I was given a huge sales pitch about GAF shingles: that the shingles produced by this company suffer premature shingle disintegration and that they still cannot fix that issue, that I may have received defective shingles at installation, that I can get the roof replaced with shingles with a 50-year warranty, etc. One MONTH later, the initial spot was still leaking and another spot developed in the kitchen. Another company person was sent out and he found the cause of the leak. It was NEVER the roof. The leak was caused by condensation in the air conditioning ducts in the attic. He told us that there was a lot of water in the ducts and the ducts not the roof were leaking. This was the issue from the very beginning. The only reason it took months for the leak to reappear after the first ‘fix’ was that the weather started cooling down and the AC was not used as much until this year’s summer heat. I honestly feel that I was conned into getting a $17K roof. I am retired, and retired or not $17K is a huge expense. The roof that was replaced was only  11 years old and I am sure it would have lasted at least another four to five years. Roofing companies in Florida are desperate for roofing jobs since Florida has been spared of major storms since 2024. I am assuming that this is one reason for aggressive sales pitches. All I am asking from them is a fair reimbursement for the AC and ceiling repair ($1K) which is the additional funds I had to spend to address the real issue and they have flatly refused to do so. I have spoken to their Project Manager, received one unpleasant call from the salesman who insisted that my roof was leaking, emailed them, received one message from their Sales Manager Ryan who has not returned any of my calls. This company prides themselves on being an honest company which is one of the reasons I chose them. Apparently this is not so.Their response is that they do not do home inspections, but if they had honestly told us that there were no roof leaks, then we would have taken the appropriate actions ourselves to accurately diagnose and resolve the issue. I have never left an unsatisfactory review for any company ever before because my belief is that if I cannot speak well of someone or something, then say nothing at all. This post is to try and educate anyone in a situation like this to please be diligent in your research before being pushed into unnecessary expenses.
